I can and do do it almost with my eyes closes one piece whacked up at a time.
My pieces, all my pieces, come up in exactly the same order. I have not memorized all 144 but the first dozen and the last dozen are always in exactly the same position as their counterpart from the previous time I did the flux the day before, and actually exactly the same as all the previous fluxes's (of size 144 at least).
I mentioned the non randomness a year and a half ago, and during that time others have and others have not experienced the same thing, specifically checking their 'pattern'.

I would believe that every location 1,2,3...143,144 for me is different then for anyone else. I.E. they might have been 'defined' the very first time I did a 144 piece flux.
Mine are kind of a Cassiopeia W towards the upper right and 3 pieces on lower left one being on the edge, one touching that and one below that other one, for the first several.
And 4 pieces almost making a box about 3 pieces horizontally and 3 pieces tall towards the upper right 2 being on the edge, and one other near the top middle, for the last few. One of these had been the middle of the flux puzzle chest in some prior design.
