Traditionally the power of alchemy is found in the combination of items. However one of the first lessons a student of alchemy must learn is that to gain something you must give something in return.

This set of advice focuses on another important aspect of the alchemical process:

DISENCHANTING:
- You can disenchant runes to get powders.
- The number of powders you get is based on the quality of the rune.
- Larger runes have a higher base quality.
- When you combine two runes, their qualities are added together, meaning combined runes will disenchant into more powders.
- The type of powders you get is based on the type of rune you're disenchanting.
- Small base runes can only disenchant into the five basic powder colors.
- Runes of a higher quality can sometimes disenchant into rare powders (white, gray, and black).

There is one more lesson after this for anyone trying to master the mysteries of this ancient magic.

How do you get the light grey and dark grey powders? The wiki says that they are not as rare as the black ones. I got 4 black ones quite easily but I have yet to get a grey powder. In my inventory I have 5 sm blue powder, 8 sm red powder, 6 sm green powder, 14 sm yellow powder, 2 sm purple powder, 4 sm black powder and 3 sm white powder. I have converted some of them to medium powders and I have 1 each blue, red, greenm purple, yellow black and white meduim powders. So I HAVE been disenchanting lots of different types of runes, large, scavenged, medium, small and different attributes and even an augmented rune but I still have not received any grey powders.

you are lucky to have gotten so many blacks.

med and larger runes have a small chance to break down into the rare colors. but as always random is random and some people will have better luck than others.

Shelagh, as per my latest update in the wiki, read the Dev comments courtesy of Justin.

If your Rune quality is greater than 2, you have a 25% chance of getting a white, grey or black powder.

The rare powders essentially are worth 2 coloured powders.

It is more complex than that, but if you can grasp the concept of the Rune quality and subsequent stages of disenchantment, you'll see how how many powders can be created and what percentage can become rare powders.

When you say "When you combine two runes, their qualities are added together, meaning combined runes will disenchant into more powders." do you mean we have to combine them at the combining station or just put them together in the disenchanting station? Example: if I disenchant a large rune (or equivalent) or 4 small runes together is there any difference?

Luca you have need to have a goal, or final end state for Alchemy. Once you know what you want, then you can use the tools to get there.

Each station does something different, their functions are separate, but when used in the correct order, or used to assist each other you can create powerful runes.

Your first question, you have to combine at the combining station.

2nd question/example.

Strictly speaking 1 large rune has the potential to give you the same amount of powder of 4 small runes. Why? Because a Large rune is quality 4, so you COULD get 4 powders. However, you could get unlucky and you could only get 1 common powder.

Anything over quality 2 can give you rare powders. So for a Large, you could get 2 rare powders as well.

Ced, all of the information about runecrafting can be found on the wiki. Runes are very powerful and it is well worth the effort to read up on them, and to experiment with them in the alchemist's shop :o) The wiki address is

you combine whatever you want to combine. most people will combine like runes to get a higher % but if I have some extras sitting around ill slap them together just for extra days as well. unless you spend BBs you wont do it much so I wouldn't stress on it too much.

as for what colors do what its all right in the creation station. just look at the different stuff and see what you want to make to see what you will need. its really not the advanced.
