With an Alchemist moving into the Commons, the mighty powers of alchemy can now be used by Bush Whackers everywhere. To help ensure everyone understands the nature of alchemy, we will be posting tips on how alchemy works and how it can be used.

The first set of advice focuses on the primary aspect of the alchemical process:

COMBINING:
- You can combine two runes to get a rune that contains both runes' effects, and an increased duration.
- The effects are always exactly the two runes added together.
- The duration is increased by half of the average of the two runes' durations.
- The quality of the new rune is the sum of the qualities of the runes being combined.
- Each combine has a gold cost and a chance of success.
- The gold cost goes up and the chance of success goes down based on the quality of the combined rune.
- If the rune you're going to create has a quality above a certain threshhold, you will not be able to combine the runes.
- If a combine fails, you lose the gold but keep the two runes, so you can try again.
- You can use a luck sphere to increase your chance to success. The luck stone is consumed when you attempt the combine, regardless of whether or not it succeeds.
- Combining runes can be VERY powerful, for example if you craft 5 Large Runes of the Void (-10% Nothing), and then combine them together, you can get an Augmented Large Rune of the Void that reduces your chance to win Nothing by 50% and lasts for a couple of weeks.

Our next post will contain details about disenchanting so check back tomorrow.

I'm confused.
on the one hand you state: - The duration is increased by half of the average of the two runes' durations.
then you give an impossible example: by 50% and lasts for a couple of weeks
I have never seen a rune last more then 3 or 4 days. The 'average' of 5 that last 4 days is 4 days, so at most this combine can last 6 days?

I think its safe to say that we will need a lot more of these tips and training sessions, hopefully without confusing or conflicting information.

I understand this thread is about Combining, but the wiki desperately needs info on all the new abilities now. Please comment if you have info we are missing.

ray I would suggest playing with it a bit.

iv not done any crafting yet just combining and I have a mana rune that give +25% and lasts 8 days.

I would guess that once you unlock the good recipes you can create and combine some rather epic runes.

Will be posting more information in the coming days so stay tuned!

@Jason - Our further posts will elaborate on the other processes involved when performing alchemy.

@Nick - I am betting that is a good guess. ;)

Raymond, an example of the duration of rune combines:

I have 6 runes of gold in my inventory (listing from longest duration down):
A1 - Large Rune (7%) (4 Days 3 Hours = 99 hours)
A2 - Medium Rune (3.9%) (3 Days 18 Hours = 90 hours)
A3 - Small Rune (3%) (2 Days 19 Hours = 67 hours)
A4 - Scavenged Rune (6.4%) (2 Days 15 Hours = 63 hours)
A5 - Scavenged Rune (5.4%) (2 Days 13 Hours = 61 hours)
A6 - Small Rune (2%) (2 Days 5 Hours = 53 hours)

If I combine runes A1 & A2, I got a combined power of 10.9% gold chance. For the combined duration, first we work out the average value of the times:

i) ((99 hours + 90 hours) /2) = 94.5 hours

Then we take 50% of that time...

ii) 94.5 hours / 2 = 47.25 hours, or 47 hours

Lastly, add that to the first rune, which is 99 hours.

iii) 99 hours + 47 hours = 146 hours) or 6 Days 2 Hours.

If in Excel, it would be A1 + (A1 + A2) / 4

*** IMPORTANT ***

Notice that I put the rune with the longest duration in slot 1 (the left hand slot).
This is because currently that is the slot that the average is added to.

If I put a rune of say 4 hours duration in Slot 1, and a rune of 8 hours in Slot 2,
the game will add the 50% average time (3 hours) to the rune in Slot 1, which gives a resultant rune of 7 hours length. If I swapped the runes around, and put the 8 hours in Slot 1, I would get a rune of 11 hours length.

And yes, I have reported this as a bug ...

******************

Also, when combining more than 2 runes, the order of combination helps as well:

If I combine all those above 6 runes together to form 1 powerful rune, (assuming I can), the combined power will always be the same, however, the resultant duration is dependant on the order of the runes combined. It is best to start with the longest duration runes first, and work your way down.
If I combine A1 & A2, then the resultant with A3, then with A4, etc, I end up with a rune with a duration of 444 hours, or 18 Days 12 hours.
If I work from smallest to largest, I end up with a rune lasting 326 hours, or 13 Days 14 hours. If I combine A1 & A2, then A3 & A4, then A5 & A6, then combine these three new runes together, I end up with a rune lasting 281 hours (11 Days 17 Hours).

Hence ... you need to decide what you want to do first before you start for duration wise. Hopefully that clears up durations of rune combining.

It would super handy to have a Cancel button - for when you decide you have picked the wrong rune (because the list jumps back to the beginning) or sphere.

Can't you just drag the correct rune over on top of the wrong one? You can in at least one of the other stations.
This has the effect of putting that new rune there and taking out that wrong one.
It is not the same as 'destroying' an equipped rune.
