The quest to open the presents should be active now. The square with the christmas tree should be showing a gold ? if you haven't opened the presents yet.

Check your play history for the last 31 hours since it's become available to cash in. The Merry Christmas Quest (check your Quest Log) became available the same time as many people saw the Carrots thing become available.
You must have already opened them since there was a ? on the Map in that square and in that square over the Presents before you cash in that Quest.
The results of that were a Jade Gem, Elfy the Pet that everyones talking about, 10 Red Stubs that are relatively worthless to most people at this point in time other than for Energy, and 11 Bush Bucks that some people are commenting on.

P.S. It still says that like all NPC say something when you click them.

Yes it would have been nice for there to be 2 sayings from those presents, the one for before saying that you have to wait, and one after saying something like "What, are you a spoiled child? You have already opened these Presents. You are going to have to wait another year for more."

P.S. As to your first post above. The Ring was rewarded for one Quest, I forget which one. The Trophy/Ribbon was rewarded for another one. And this Pet was for another. I really have slacked off on my record keeping. But I never went into this kind of detail before anyway.
