I just completed the first badge with a level 15 feng and only three other level 4 guardians (2 that i caught automatically at level 4). i rarely used the others besides a few switch outs to level my first guardian.

i didn't have a strategy the first time i tried.
this time my strategy was to capture the tutorial feng and level him up first in wild grass fights.
(Yes I know this was my speed alpha test with unlimited energy, but i did this to test the theory that you didn't need the others to level up)
this made trainer battles easier.
and feng's level 15 move pummel really came in handy for the gym leader final battle.
funny thing was feng actually fainted before the last attack to the enemy. so when my guardian from Jill defeated the enemy, with all the exp it gained an automatic 2 levels and plus some. that was fun
