This year, the cost of the betting has been reduced to 1760 gold (TY Devs), but if you ask the NPC how much the betting cost is, he'll tell you 2200.

I bet on 6 games and it cost me 2200 gold for each bet. I did not get refunded any gold when the races finished. When I won my final race, I was rewarded 5 Dog Days Tokens and a Dog Days Satchel (which contained topaz) (The cost in 2018 was 2100 gold, so the gold cost actually went up this year ... this is a glitch since the cost of the bet is supposed to be reduced to 1760 gold this year). 1841 Posts	Link to post - Posted August 19th 2019 at 8:37 AM Flybaby If nothing else, you at least get an achievement, and Large Energy Pack if you buy all the racer assessment upgrades for the Companion Race Track. The release notes in the blog states "Increased the difference in odds provided by the different â€œlevelsâ€ of fitness and mood to of race track competitors to make betting a little more predictable" Personally, I don't see any difference from last year. I have tried keeping track of the betting odds to see if there is any correlation among the winners but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as far as guessing the winner correctly. However, if you buy all the books, you can at least rule out the 2 lowest percentage choices immediately, giving you 50/50 odds of betting on the right one. It doesn't work 100% of the time but it at least narrows down the field.
