Nate DauerOK, so for while I just assumed that the listed power of these attacks reflects about how much damage they will do on the initial attack. Turns out, it's not. Or at least it's not for some of them.
Flare's initial hit's power is definitely less than 9 (probably 6 or 7). And after my Vinibark learned Drain (10), I realized that Thorn Prick's power is definitely less than 11 (probably 7, 8 or 9). I'm not sure about Rend, and I've never actually used Puddle myself. I would *really* appreciate it if the values listed for their attack power reflected *only* the power of the initial hit, not the "potential" total power of the hit *if* the extra damage activates. Right now it is very misleading. |

Benedikt AlbertLast Edited February 14th 2012 at 10:01 AM I can tell you that Puddle had a power of 6 before the update. Now it has 10, but it does the same damage. The damage of Puddle is 6 + 4 + 4 = 6 + 8 with the DOT having a chance of 50% which makes it 6 + 8/2 = 6 + 4 = 10. The same thing happend to Flare. Flare used to have a power of 6 and has 9 now. It's very likely 6 + 3 + 3 => 6 + 6/2 (remember 50%) = 6 + 3 = 9.
I do like that change a lot actually because it makes all those attacks better compareable. With all those DOTs stacking with theirselves the stated power also reflects the true damage those attacks do on average. With the old tooltips it was not that easy to tell, if Flare or Flame Strike is the better attack (9 and 10). Now it's clear. Good thing. I'm pretty sure, Rend uses the same mechanic... only that the chance is 100% for Rend (but that changes nothing). I'm not sure about Thorn Prick... is the initial attack really worse than Drain? I thought it wasn't. |

Nate DauerYup. The thing that I dislike about the information is that you have to rely on them hitting and then wait two full turns for the full effect to take place. Frankly, I'd be happier if I'd kept Ember than Flare. But back then Flare had a 100% accuracy and it always hit twice afterward.
And yeah, Thorn Prick is weaker than Drain. For the longest time I just thought my Vinibark was kind of weak to not be able to deliver very much damage for an 11-power attack. |

Justin Stocks (CNE Dev)The Power number is intended to display the average power of the attack. For attacks with a proc, it's the average power of the attack based on the proc rate and proc damage. So for example, if a proc has a 50% chance to hit and has a power of 4, and the initial attack has a power of 8, the ability power will be 10. We feel that this is a better solution than having the attack power be displayed as 8, which causes people to feel like an ability they get later is weaker than an ability they got in the past even though on average it's a more powerful attack.

Nate DauerBut Flare *is* weaker than Ember.
Flare has 6 power, Ember has 8. Flare has a 50% chance to deal an extra 6 power's worth of damage, but not until the end of the next turn (for 3, and the next turn for 6). In a short battle, as most of them are due to the energy restraints, this makes Flare a lot less valuable than Ember. I mean, I can understand the concern for the players who don't read (which seems to be A LOT of them, judging by these forums), but won't this also confuse them, as well as the people who DO read? How about a label system that doesn't only display numbers singularly: Flare 6(3)(3) Flare 6(12) Pummel 8(3)(3)(3) Pummel (4)(4)(3)(3)(3) Pummel 8(17) Or something like that? |
