So my suggestion is pretty simple, although I certainly recognise the amount of work this would take to implement.

Give our crusaders a home base.

Crusaders could return to the home base after every reset. Any gold left over from the run would be brought back to the base, where it could be used to buy / upgrade buildings.

The base decorations could change in keeping with the theme of the latest event (apologies in advance to your artists)

The buildings would provide buffs during the run, and would give you a lot more options for adding other functionality in future, since you could add a building to allow for almost any kind of customization:

giving crusaders makeovers if you don't like their look

load-out management (if you decide you want more than 3 items options for each crusader)

a 'market' allowing you to buy / sell unwanted buff cards to an NPC for rubies (someone already made this suggestion in a previous thread and I think its a great idea - damn clicking)

a 'time machine' building allowing new players to go back and play old events to unlock those crusaders

those are just off the top of my head, I'm sure people will have a lot more.
