hey folks, I am wondering if you collect the pets mainly through finding the eggs and hatching them, if you come across an egg that says its an animal you already have, say a 'fox' for instance will the new one be a different color? or is it just a second of the red one I already have? that would be great to get a black, white, gray or silver fox, but if its just another red one I don't want to waste all the time it takes to hatch it you know. thanks in advance, have a great day.

it pretty much doesn't tell you that you already have one of any pet when you whack up a random egg. You have to know which you can do by checking your inventory and through the guy at P.A.G.A.S. if you have built that.
That being said, there are 10 generation 5 pets, the current generation.
Eggs that can be awarded in repeatable quest satchels can be any of the gen 1 - gen 4 prior generations of pets, of which there are 10 kinds each of those.
but all 'bat' are bats, one kind of pet, no different colors or anything. But the pets in general come in 3 kinds of odds, i.e. a Bat can be fruit, gems or power, something that is generated only on completely raising the pet.
