Is it not possible to complete older areas?

I'm at max level and currently playing in the flux. However, I wanted to go back to the Eastern swamp, which I didn't complete early on, because it is an optional area. The problem is, that out of dozens of whacks, I'm getting no puzzle pieces and no quest items. The whacks are only costing 7 energy, and I'm sure that must have something to do with it, but I'd much rather spend more energy and be able to achieve my goals. Right now, I feel that I am just wasting my time, energy, power and mana.

it should work.
and i believe things are geared to the cost of bushes.
I do the Hermits every day and it does take a lot of energy to do and while doing i get quest items for all other quests.
Puzzle pieces I can't say, but the gearing of progress to what your energy available wass back then might make it take a lot longer to do. See if you can find posts about earlier sba's done by people much farther on in the game.

i.e. since flux bushes cost over 4 times as much as bushes over there, you might have to whack 4 or more times as much to see similar results to what you are used to.

I went back to both areas again today to compare, and spent 1,000 energy in each area. I earned 5 puzzle pieces in the flux, and zero puzzle pieces in the Eastern swamp. I do understand that when playing in lower level areas, the rewards are pro-rated "per whack", but for the same amount of energy spent, the rewards at the end should be similar. I spent nearly a third of my total max energy with no advancement in the quest at all. IMHO, there is no incentive to go back to play the Eastern swamp if the odds are stacked against me. I'm hoping the devs will take a look at this problem and make the necessary adjustments.

The amount of energy you have to spend is what is holding you back. The areas are keyed to your current max energy. IE if an area is set to drop 24 puzzle pieces per 3 full energy bars (not sure of the exact numbers just an example) so if you went there during the normal flow and had a max of 700 energy you'd need to spend 2100 to get all the pieces, but if you've gone back at the end of the game and your max energy is up to 3500 then you'd need to spend 10500 energy and if the bushes did not level with you it would take a lot longer.

Thank you both for your input. I know that you are comparing the cost of what it was, had I played at a lower level, to what it would cost now, playing at a higher level. Trust me, I do understand the concept, and understand that it's costing more now than it did back then. For example, had I played the eastern swamp back then, it would have cost $1000 per 143 whacks. Now, it's costing me $4433 for the same amount of whacks. But I'm not disputing that. because I'm at a higher level and earning more energy, and that part was pro-rated accurately.

However, that's not the part that I'm talking about. I'll try to explain it a little better.
The higher the level, the more energy it costs per whack, but the resulting amount of energy spent, and rewards accrued, should be proportionate, no matter what level you are or what area you play in. That's the definition of pro-rating (although rewards will vary depending on luck, or trinkets used).

For example, at max level, the bushes are costing 31 energy. In the test I mentioned above, I spent 1000 energy, which means I whacked 32 bushes, and earned an average of 5 puzzle pieces.

The bushes in the eastern swamp cost 7 energy. So for the same 1,000 energy, I whacked 143 bushes. For that many bushes whacked, I should have earned something in rewards, but I received no puzzle pieces, and no quest items. Just gold or nothings (and I played with the same trinkets as above). I have played in that area several times since then, with the same kind of results. Very few or no rewards. I don't mind spending more energy, I understand that. Just throw me a bone once in a while. lol

I just think that this is an area that needs looking into, so that the energy spent and rewards earned are distributed proportionately.

if you have not received any puzzle pieces since your first post then stop arguing with us and send a trouble ticket to the Devs.
We answered your question, yes you can do any old levels like one or the other of evergreen forest left undone, or eastern or western forest left undone, or any sba left undone, or any Nate or Kaine side adventure left undone. you can do them when they came out, you can do them whenever you want to do them, even next year.
something is wrong with your account and nothing us users can say will fix that, the Devs can look at that.

Have you tried setting up your trinkets for Max probability to see puzzle pieces? It can actually make a huge difference. Also, make sure to equip your highest level puzzle companion. You can even manipulate the way your mount gains attributes while it levels by feeding it-if you do not have a puzzle attribute available upon its next level up, keep feeding it hay until the attribute that you want becomes available, then feed it the proper feed to increase the chance that it will gain that attribute upon its next level.

If you find that you are getting absolutely NO puzzle pieces, check to make sure that you have not already found them all. I know that I have accidentally done that many times without realizing that I had a complete puzzle. If the puzzle is not complete and you are not seeing any puzzle pieces, you really should send in a support ticket to the devs, they will fix it.

Thank you, Marci for your kind response. In answer to your question, I did try using different trinket, rune, and companion combinations, to no avail. My progress continues to be very slow. In answer to Raymond's rude remark ... I don't know why you would accuse me of arguing. I have been very polite and professional in trying to explain my situation. I am posting here, in the chance that other posters may have encountered the same problem and could possibly help, before I bother the devs with a support ticket.

Sticky: How to: Open a Support Ticket!

"First off, before you open a ticket you should check to see if your issue has an easily solution or has been reported before. The best way to do this is to search the forum. If you can't find any previous posts about your issue, you could also try opening your own thread to see if anybody else is having similar problems at this time. Sometimes we have temporary glitches or issues that only affect a subset of users, and getting input from others can help both you and our own debugging process."
