According to my Inventory, I have a "+40.25% Odds to win Puzzle Pieces".

I have +0.25% from my mount, and other than that I have a Gems pet, and Gems, Fruit, Less Nothings, and Quest Cooldown trinkets equipped.

Any idea where the surplus +40% is coming from? Did I forget about some permanent puzzle piece buff somewhere?

I don't think there's anything like that 'permanent'. Check your 'sword' and any runes it might be holding.

I've checked that (I never have crafted a puzzle piece rune actually)

I even went and unequipped everything (Mount, Pet, Sword, and all trinkets except the energy refill trinkets), and it still had the +40% Puzzle Pieces...

there was one thing way back i think in the desert where you choose a permanent something, i think the choices were 10 mana power or energy, perhaps something else too, but 40% seems strange. check the wiki.
I forget exactly where it was so I can't suggest a search term for looking in the wiki...

Hi ATM,

If you are new to the game, and too high a level for your current fields, you get a "catch up" bonus of +40% to puzzle pieces that gradually decreases until you get to areas were the game thinks you should be.

Interesting....

I've just come back from a LONG time away, so I suppose that would probably explain it?

Yes, that would also explain it.
