The more epics you get, the higher the chance of duplicates. If epics could not be duplicated, you will end up with all epics, and you will have nothing to look forward to. Stagnation kills a game.

i guess you never ever collected baseball cards or anything similar and got hundreds or thousands of duplicates for a few new ones...

I did not say anyone is supposed to get all epics.

I am agreeing with Irrimn on that current epic drop provides no incentive to spend any money on this game. (personally I only spend on golden epics during events depending on how good they are)

I also understand the frustration with RNG. Yes I'm supporting the devs, but it's nice to also get some good gear. It's a bit maddening when random people get an epic I've been looking for > 100 days and have spent a few bucks here and there. I think a nice option would be a guarantee of an epic you don't already have with the purchase of say a 7-pack or more. It doesn't have to be the missing DPS in your main, simply one you don't have already.

I bought some to support the devs since they finally started adding talents, but I agree that buying chests for the sake of getting better gear is almost completely worthless unless they do something about reducing duplicates. Nearly all the jeweled chests I get are total garbage. Lately when I finally get an epic after weeks of grinding it's either a lousy epic trinket or a repeat epic worth 4 EP even though I'm missing 80-90% of Epics. I realize they're probably afraid to make Epics easier to get thinking that it'd reduce the number of chests people would buy, but I think people would be a lot more likely to buy chests if RNG was less of a factor.

Edit: If they did prevent duplicate non-trinket Epics, it'd still be probably 1000+ jeweled chests to get them all. I don't see that being unreasonable, especially since there are new event crusaders added every month with their own epics.

If I did manage to get every single Epic in the game somehow after years of playing, I wouldn't suddenly stop playing either. In fact, I'm more likely to get bored of bashing my head against an RNG wall if there's zero guaranteed progress of any kind. After all, there will surely always be something to pursue whether it be new objectives or talents.
