I am about to reset and it says you get rewards based on progress. So I have been buying all the upgrades I missed and didnt use is this useful to get more on reset or is it a waste of time? What else can I do to get more on reset?

waste of time.
Not completely, since there are achievements for upgrades, but they're not related to resetting
you get idols based on total crusader levels (1 idol per 500 levels), and you get rubies for completing campaign objectives.
if this is your first reset, then you'll automatically complete the 1st objective by resetting, so that leaves just crusader levels

1 per 500 levels total across all guys, one could be 1 and another 499 and that's 500

Xavier, just to clarify, the total crusader levels is cumulative so a lvl 100 hero and a lvl 400 hero add to 500 and thus give an idol.

no need to get them to 500. GET your total to a large a multiple of 500 as possible. so you can upgrade say the cheapest guys for an idol, or spend weeks to try to level Nate to 500 for 1 idol.
your choice
