Just yesterday while preparing for the developers to look at my missing pet problem I renamed them all. Just go to the pet person, equip pet A and rename him, then B and rename him... One can't, and never could, rename a pet in your inventory, only the currently equipped one.

Yay!!

Becouse I don't want to get an egg and decided to hatch it (couse I have all different pets now) the same day that new pets will be released... So if You could only tell like few days before the update... I would really appreciate that!

Too much room for confusion.
