The sword comes from completing levels. The monkeys seem to collect quite a few items as you get further complete. Can only speculate on the rest of them. But I'm sure the side islands will hold new levels with more monkeys. I originally thought the vines would connect the other islands but the more I think about it maybe its just another item from completion (jack and the beanstalk makes sense on the fairy tale monkey)
