pets and mounts and trinkets and runes within swords an be used to modify those. either making one thing a little more likely or less likely. a little change may be noticeable in a long term statistical study of drops before and after some change you make if all things are otherwise identical.

the only sure bet it to have -100% or +100% in some thing from all your sources of modification. many of us have +/-100% on 3 different things, but it costs lots of gold to make the required runes.
